In the Mosaic of Slovene Performing Arts

Cellist Nikolaj Sajko and pianist Miha Haas have released a compact disc with works for cello and piano by Edvard Grieg, Risto Savin, Bohuslav Martinů and Blaž Pucihar.
Such acts of young artists are very rare with us. One cannot expect broad media visibility or any enormous "business", which is becoming alongside all kinds of sound cacophony and consumerism prevailing value of our "high" society.  The purpose of their deed is certainly a desire to provide something of value to our surroundings, something long-lasting. In doing this you have to blend into the rainbow of sonic truth, let be completely surrounded by it and – of course – enjoy it. Sensitive artists would not exchange such impulses for anything in the world.

The protagonists of this CD were largely being led by this motto, this is proven by the selection of works that were performed. First, there is the well-known Grieg Sonata in A Minor, Op. 36, where both instruments are represented with an equivalent role. Putting the Sonata, Op. 22 by Risto Savin on the programme is certainly a fresh approach. It is interesting that the composer is quite unjustly in the shadow of Slovene performing arts. Martinů’s Variations on a theme by Rossini for cello and piano are, of course, a real challenge for the cellist. Their playing is immerse and virtuosically smooth, the recording is dynamically well balanced.

The CD finishes with extraverted Summer Sonata Op. 8 for cello and piano by Blaž Pucihar. The piece is independent from the modern quest for a different sound. It rounds up the CD, in which Nikolaj Sajko and Miha Haas as equivalent artists added a piece to the mosaic of Slovenian performing arts.
